WHAT IS THE CALIBRATION?
Calibration in measurement technology and metrology is the comparison of measurement values delivered by a device under test with those of a calibration standard of known accuracy. Such a standard could be another measurement device of known accuracy, a device generating the quantity to be measured such as a voltage, sound tone, or a physical artefact, such as a metre ruler.
The outcome of the comparison can result in no significant error being noted on the device under test, a significant error being noted but no adjustment made, or an adjustment made to correct the error to an acceptable level. Strictly speaking, the term calibration means just the act of comparison, and does not include any subsequent adjustment.
Why calibration is important?
The accuracy of all measuring devices degrade over time. This is typically caused by normal wear and tear. However, changes in accuracy can also be caused by electric or mechanical shock or a hazardous manufacturing environment (e.x., oils, metal chips etc.). Depending on the type of the instrument and the environment in which it is being used, it may degrade very quickly or over a long period of time. The bottom line is that, calibration improves the accuracy of the measuring device. Accurate measuring devices improve product quality.
The main reasons for calibration are to ensure the reliability of the instrument, that it can be trusted. To determine the accuracy of the instrument and to ensure the readings are consistent with other measurements.
Considering the costs arising from legal action for damages that might be filed against you, the expenses for proper calibration and adjustment are minor in comparison. Companies who take their responsibility seriously and wish to establish long-term business relationships therefore need to calibrate their equipment regularly. It could also void your warranty if your instrument is not calibrated.
When should you calibrate your measuring device?
A measuring device should be calibrated:
- According to recommendation of the manufacturer.
- After any mechanical or electrical shock.
- Periodically (annually, quarterly, monthly)
Hidden costs and risks associated with the un-calibrated measuring device could be much higher than the cost of calibration. Therefore, it is recommended that the measuring instruments are calibrated regularly by a reputable company to ensure that errors associated with the measurements are in the acceptable range.
SIKA TEMPERATURE CALIBRATOR
Temperature sensors are subject to mechanical, thermal and chemical stress. This results in a drift the longer the sensors are in use. Only the regular calibration of the sensors provides information on the difference between the actual temperature and the measured temperature and makes the specific drift visible.
Dry block calibrators and micro calibration baths are used to check and calibrate a wide range of temperature measuring instruments and temperature sensors. Mechanical, electro-mechanical or electronic measurement equipment can be checked with ease. The compact and robust SIKA instruments are easy to transport, simple to use and offer all the features required for the specific test.
A temperature calibrator needs to meet a wide range of requirements: as a portable device, it has to cope with frequently changing operation locations in the test bay or in production, while being equally suitable for stationary use in the measuring workshop and testing and inspection laboratory. For this reason, the instruments must be lightweight and handy for quick and easy use on site. SIKA offers several temperature calibrators to cover the range from -55 °C to 1300 °C.
Pressure is one of the most commonly measured quantities in engineering, which is why exact and reliable pressure measurement is especially important.
However, the characteristics of the even best sensor or transducer can be altered by a wide variety of factors. This drift cannot be prevented, and it leads to incorrect readings. Calibration allows these deviations to be measured and documented in a certificate. All pressure measuring devices that significantly affect processes or activities should be calibrated before being used. SIKA‘s mobile test and calibration devices are effective aids for performing the necessary test and calibration tasks quickly.
